Some people come into their natural soap journey expecting the same results as the chemical-filled bars at the store. You will notice a difference in the way natural soap feels on your skin, the way it lathers, and also recommended ways to store your soap bar between uses. There are a few tricks and tips to making your handmade, natural soap last as long as possible.
Keep your soap dry.
When you aren't using it, of course. This is probably the most important recommendation. Keeping the soap dry and away from sitting in a pool of water between uses will help prevent it from breaking down because of the natural ingredients. Using a soap keeper/saver, a slotted soap dish or a soap lift in the shower will help keep the soap out of the standing water. Fun Fact: You may think heat would be the biggest enemy of brick soap, it's actually humidity.
Rinse the suds off.
When you're done washing, make sure the suds are rinsed off your bar. This helps with the breaking down of the soap. You'll find your soap lasts longer just by doing this simple step.
Cut your soap bars down.
Use 1/4 or 1/2 at a time. The quarter briks also work well for smaller hands. This trick also allows you to change scents throughout the week. You will still want to make sure the smaller pieces aren't in a puddle of water between uses.
Allow the soap to cure longer.
The drier the soap is, the longer it will last. Allowing the soap to harden longer will also keep your soap lasting. The tactic mentioned above, cutting down into smaller pieces, will also give the soap time to set and cure while you're using the other pieces.
Get a loofah or soap saver.
Using a loofah or a soap saver (also called a soap sack) will help get the soap all worked up into a nice, thick lather. A washcloth will work, too, but you may have to work it up a bit more to get the same sudsy experience.
Worth The Change.
When using natural bar soap, you'll have to recognize there are some special steps to making it last longer. It's not complicated care, just likely different. Switching to natural soap bars will not only be healthier for our environment, with less plastic, but it is also better for your skin with fewer chemicals.
