It Started in a Hospital Chair
Every business has an origin story. Ours begins in a hospital chair in Fort Wayne, Indiana. With a lymphoma warrior, a passion for natural ingredients, and a simple question: "What if the products we put on our skin could be as pure and intentional as the food we eat?"
I'm Jennifer Grice, founder of The Smelly Panda Soap Company. This is the story of how a personal health journey, a love for artisanal craftsmanship, and a commitment to giving back are turning into something bigger than I ever imagined—and we're just getting started.
Every great business starts with a simple idea and the courage to try
Why We Started: A Personal Mission
The Lymphoma Journey That Changed Everything
In 2018, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. Like many cancer patients, I went through several treatments, faced uncertainty, went through a stem cell transplant, and came out the other side with a completely different perspective on health, wellness, and what really matters.
During my recovery, I became hyper-aware of everything I was putting into and onto my body. I started reading labels—really reading them—and I was shocked by what I found. Harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, ingredients I couldn't pronounce, and vague terms like "fragrance" that could hide dozens of undisclosed substances.
I thought: If what goes into our bodies matters this much, shouldn't what goes onto our bodies matter just as much?
The Research Begins
I started listening to the concerns of other patients while I was sitting through my hour-long chemotherapy treatments. Recognizing that they, too, had similar skin issues and some of the same concerns about quality as i did. The longer I thought about it, the more I wanted to help. I began researching natural soap making. Real, traditional cold-process soap made with plant-based oils, natural butters, and essential oils. The kind of soap that takes 4-6 weeks to cure properly, because we're not rushing the process or adding synthetic hardeners.
My mind became a laboratory. I considered many, many, many different oil combinations, learned about saponification (the chemical process that turns oils into soap), tested essential oil blends, and gave bars to friends and family for feedback.
Some scents we ended up choosing, initially, didn't have the clean ingredients list we were looking for. We knew right away we didn't want artificial fragrance or unnatural dyes.
The "Aha" Moment
The turning point came when a friend with sensitive skin told me she loved using our goat's milk soap. Another friend said she enjoyed our lavender blend as part of her bedtime routine. A family member appreciated our gentle, nourishing formulas.
That's when I realized: this wasn't just about offering soap. It was about sourcing products that genuinely helped people feel better—physically and emotionally. Products made with intention, transparency, and care.
And if I was going to do this, I wanted it to mean something beyond just selling soap. I wanted to give back to causes that mattered to me: cancer research (because of my own journey) and wildlife conservation (because protecting our planet is protecting our future).
Early Challenges: Learning to Build a Business
Building a business is a journey—we're learning and growing every day
Challenge #1: From Hobby to Business
I had to learn (and am still learning):
- How to source products in bulk without compromising quality
- How to price products fairly while covering costs and supporting charitable giving
- How to create consistent formulas that work every single time
- How to package products in a way that's both eco-friendly and protective
- How to build a website, manage inventory, handle shipping, and provide customer service
I've made mistakes. I underpriced products at first. I over-complicated packaging. I said yes to every customer's request and nearly burned out. But each mistake teaches me something, and slowly, the business side is starting to make sense.
Challenge #2: Finding the Right Partners
I quickly realized I couldn't do everything myself. I needed to partner with skilled artisan soapmakers who shared my values: quality over quantity, natural ingredients, traditional methods, and sustainable practices.
Finding the right partners took time. I visited workshops, tested products, and asked hard questions about sourcing and processes. I wanted to work with people who cared as much about the craft as I did—people who wouldn't cut corners or compromise on ingredients to save a few cents.
When I found those partners, everything changed. We could scale production without sacrificing quality. We could offer more variety while maintaining our standards. We could grow the business while staying true to our mission.
Challenge #3: Standing Out in a Crowded Market
The natural soap market is crowded. There are a lot of great soapmakers out there. So why should someone choose us?
We decided to lean into what makes us different:
- Transparency: Full ingredient lists, clear sourcing information, honest communication
- Charitable giving: A percentage of every sale supports cancer research and wildlife conservation
- Quality and craftsmanship: Traditional cold-process methods, proper curing time, premium ingredients
- Inclusivity: Vegan options, goat milk formulas, and soon unscented variety—something for everyone
- Personality: We're The Smelly Panda. We don't take ourselves too seriously, but we take our products very seriously
The red panda mascot? That came from our support of the Red Panda Network. These adorable, endangered animals needed a voice, and we wanted to be part of their conservation story. Plus, who doesn't love a red panda?
Small Wins That Keep Us Going
Every Customer Matters
We're not a big company. We're not trying to compete with mass-market brands. We're a small, purpose-driven business, and every single customer matters to us.
When someone chooses our soap over the dozens of options at the drugstore, that means something. When someone takes the time to leave a review or send us a message about how our products helped them, that fuels us to keep going.
We started with bar soap. Now we're growing to offer:
- Multiple varieties of handcrafted bar soap
- Nourishing body creams
- Exfoliating sugar scrubs
- Relaxing bath salts
- Beard oil for our gentlemen customers
- Eco-friendly accessories (hemp washcloths, soap saver bags)
- Curated gift bundles
Each product is developed with the same care and intention as those first tested batches. We test everything. We listen to customer feedback. We never compromise on quality or values.
What Drives Us Today
Business with purpose: Every purchase supports causes that matter
Our Mission: Quality, Sustainability, and Giving Back
Our mission hasn't changed since those early scent experiments. We're committed to:
1. Quality and Craftsmanship
We partner with skilled artisan soapmakers who use traditional cold-process methods. We source premium natural ingredients. We allow proper curing time (4-6 weeks for most soaps). We don't rush the process or cut corners.
Quality isn't just a marketing term for us—it's a non-negotiable standard.
2. Natural and Sustainable
Every product uses plant-based oils, natural butters, essential oils, and botanical extracts. No harsh chemicals. No synthetic fragrances. No ingredients we wouldn't want on our own skin.
We use minimal, eco-friendly packaging. We support local artisans through our sourcing. We're constantly looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact.
3. Transparency
We list every ingredient. We explain our sourcing. We're honest about what our products can and can't do. We answer questions. We admit when we don't know something and find out.
Trust is earned through transparency, and we work to earn it every day.
4. Charitable Giving
A percentage of every sale supports two causes close to our hearts:
- Blood Cancer United (formerly Leukemia and Lymphoma Society): Funding research, patient support, and awareness for blood cancers. This is personal—I'm a lymphoma survivor, and I want to help others facing this fight.
- Red Panda Network: Protecting endangered red pandas and their habitats in Nepal, India, and Bhutan through conservation, community development, and research.
What Keeps Us Going
Customer stories:
When someone emails to say our soap helped their family members, or that our lavender blend became part of their nightly wind-down routine, or that they love knowing their purchase supports cancer research—that's what keeps us going.
The team:
My husband, Matthew, has been part of this journey from the beginning. It began as a thought, blooming into a name and a logo. He's been the biggest support in venturing out into the community to share our products. This isn't a one-person show—it's a team effort, and I'm grateful for everyone who's contributed.
The mission:
Every donation we send to Blood Cancer United and the Red Panda Network reminds us why we do this. We're not just running a business—we're funding research, protecting wildlife, and making a positive impact.
The future:
We're still growing. We have new products in development. We're exploring new partnerships. We're finding new ways to give back. We're learning every day. And no matter how big we get, we'll never lose sight of why we started: to create products that help people feel better while making the world a little bit better, too.
